Here lie the remains of Don Francisco J. Barnés y Tomás, Doctor of Theology and Philosophy and Letters, Graduate in Law and Professor of this Literary University. He was a Catholic priest. While he believed in the dogma, he practiced the acts of Religion with dignity and strict respect. When, after mature examination and continuous exercises of reason, he stopped believing in the supernatural order (which he judged as fantastic), his sincere character did not allow him to continue a sterile and self-righteous life, mocking and exploiting the credulity of the people.
He followed nature, our mother. He married a worthy woman; he was the father of a family whose duties did not neglect for an instant, and in social dealings with all kinds of people, he offered himself as a man without privilege or religious privilege. He did not believe in miracles, but in instruction and human work.
He passed away in the peace of God on March 5, 1892, at 58.
By the way, this tombstone is in the cemetery for pagans, in Seville.

Aquí descansan los restos de Don Francisco J. Barnés y Tomás, Doctor en Teología y Filosofía y letras, Licenciado en Derecho y Catedrático de esta Universidad Literaria. Fue sacerdote católico. Mientras creyó en el dogma, practicó los actos de la Religión con dignidad y escrupuloso respeto; Cuando después de maduro examen y ejercicios continuados de razón, dejó de creer en el orden sobrenatural, (que juzgó fantástico), su carácter sincero no le permitió continuar una vida estéril y farisaica, burlando y explotando la credulidad de las gentes.
Prosiguió a la naturaleza, nuestra común madre; contrajo matrimonio con digna mujer; fue padre de familia, cuyos deberes no descuidó un instante y en el trato social con toda clase de personas se ofreció como hombre sin fuero ni privilegio religioso. No creyó en otros milagros que en la instrucción y trabajo humano.
Falleció en La Paz de Dios el día 5 de marzo de 1892, a los 58 años de edad.
Por cierto, esta lápida está en el cementerio de paganos, en Sevilla.
